SALEM – Beginning Sunday, Jan. 6, nighttime detours are scheduled for Interstate 81 to continue the removal of the Route 636 (Friendship Road) bridge as part of the ongoing road construction project to build a five-mile truck climbing lane along southbound I- 81 in Montgomery County between mile markers 120 and 125.
Northbound detours will take place Sunday, Jan. 6 through Tuesday, Jan. 8. Traffic will be detoured beginning at 9 p.m. each night until 6 a.m. the following morning.
Northbound I-81 traffic will be detoured at exit 118 (Christiansburg) onto Route 11/460 and back onto I-81 at exit 132 (Dixie Caverns).
Southbound detours will take place Wednesday, Jan. 9 and Thursday, Jan. 10. The detour will begin at 8 p.m. each night and end at 6 a.m. the following morning.
Southbound I-81 traffic will be detoured at exit 132 (Dixie Caverns) onto Route 11/460 and back onto I-81 at exit 118 (Christiansburg).
Dates and times are tentative and could be adjusted due to weather or work schedule. Signs and message boards will be in place to alert drivers to these traffic detours.
Work on the truck climbing lane project is expected to be completed in November 2013.
