[ARCHIVED] VDOT: Road Conditions Improve on Major Roads and Interstates

SALEM – Equipment operators with the Virginia Department of Transportation and its contractors have made progress on plowing and treating the interstates and primary roads this morning. In the Roanoke and New River valleys, these major roads (those numbered 1-599) are now in minor condition, which means they are mostly clear with isolated slick spots.

As with any winter weather event, equipment operators concentrate their initial efforts interstates and primary roads until the snow stops falling and these roads are plowed and treated before turning their attention to the secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above) and neighborhood streets.

As of 6:30 a.m., VDOT is reporting the following road conditions:

Interstate 81 in the Roanoke and New River valleys and I-581 in the Roanoke Valley are in minor condition, which means they are mostly clear with isolated slick spots. Primary roads (those numbered 1-599) in the Roanoke and New River valleys and in Bedford County are in minor condition, which means they are mostly clear with isolated slick spots.

Snow plow operators are beginning to work on secondary roads and neighborhood streets in the Roanoke and New River valleys. Conditions on these roads will improve as equipment operators make progress and temperatures rise today.
