[ARCHIVED] Salem District: Interstates and Most Primary Roads are Clear

SALEM – Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) have worked throughout the day to plow and treat roadways as necessary.

As of 2:30 p.m. Interstates throughout the 12-county Salem District are reported to be clear and most primary roads (those numbered 1 – 599) are clear or in minor condition. Secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above) vary from clear to minor with Franklin, Floyd and Montgomery counties reporting moderate conditions on some secondary routes. Road conditions are expected to continue to improve into the late afternoon and early evening hours.

VDOT will continue to monitor roadways overnight for refreezing. Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before traveling tonight and tomorrow morning.

The 12-county VDOT Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Franklin, Floyd, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski and Roanoke.

Road condition definitions:
Severe – significant snow or ice on roadway
Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway.
Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush
