When crews first arrived, they reported fire showing from the front of the two-story building. Firefighters from the Cave Spring, Back Creek, Clearbrook and City #7 stations had the flames under control in about 30 minutes. Crews then worked to make sure the fire had not spread into the attic space or walls.
A resident of the complex arrived home and saw the front door of an apartment on fire and called 9-1-1, then honked her car horn to wake residents up.
The fire has been ruled accidental and determined to have originated in the light fixture outside the front door of the apartment. The fire then spread to the front door and façade of that apartment and to the front of the apartment next door. The fire may have sparked as a result of a bird’s nest in the fixture or could have been an electrical failure in the fixture. Damages are estimated at $30,000 and two families from the two neighboring apartments are displaced. The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist with displacement planning.
No injuries were reported.
