[ARCHIVED] Jury Duty Scam

Back in late 2014 and in January of 2015 the Roanoke County Police Department and the Roanoke County Sheriff's Office received numerous complaints in reference to citizens being contacted by phone and told that they missed jury duty by a person identifying themselves as a Roanoke County Sheriff's Deputy. They are advised that as a result of missing jury duty that they now have a warrant out for their arrest. They then instruct them that if they want to avoid going to jail that they must immediately go get a Green Dot card or similar card and give the card number over the phone. Shortly, after giving the card numbers to the caller the money is removed from the account. This week the Roanoke County Police Department and the Roanoke County Sheriff's Department has again received numerous complaints about this scam.
We want to again stress that under no circumstances would a member of a law enforcement agency in the Commonwealth of Virginia ever solicit any type of payment. Our investigation into these cases is on-going and anyone with information should call the Criminal Investigations Division of the Roanoke County Police at 540-777-8641, the Emergency Communication Center at 540-562-3265 or the Roanoke Valley Crime Line at 540-344-8500.
