[ARCHIVED] Cone with a Cop Community Outeach Program Debuts

(Roanoke County, VA) – On Thursday, July 28, the Roanoke County Police Department, Roanoke County Sheriff’s Office and Roanoke County Fire & Rescue will be partnering with Freedom First Credit Union to host “Cone with a Cop.”

The community is invited to attend Thursday’s events, held at the Villages at Garst Creek Apartments from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., and at the Peters Creek Apartments from
2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.

Cone with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to discuss issues, build relationships, learn more about Roanoke County’s public safety efforts, and enjoy ice cream provided by Freedom First’s ice cream truck. All community members are invited to attend.

The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies, or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community, and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Cone with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

This event follows two others called Coffee with a Cop which is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the county, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.
