[ARCHIVED] Traffic Alert: Avoid travel as snow combined with cold temperatures will create slick roads

Snow combined with temperatures well below freezing is anticipated to create difficult driving conditions tonight and into the weekend.

Drivers are strongly encouraged to monitor weather forecasts in their specific areas and adjust plans for the new few days to avoid travel, especially during the height of the storm.

VDOT crews and contractors have pre-treated the interstates and primary roads (those numbered 1-599) throughout southwestern Virginia, but these routes will still become snow covered and icy, especially as temperatures drop overnight.

Snow plow operators will be focusing their initial efforts on the interstates and primary roads and will continue making passes over these routes until the snow stops. Once these major routes have been plowed and treated, crews will turn their attention to secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above) and neighborhood streets.

With low temperatures expected for the next few days, untreated secondary roads and neighborhood streets will become snow covered and icy. Any accumulating snow that is packed down by vehicles on these routes has the potential to freeze due to the cold temperatures and remain until temperatures rise.

Traffic and road condition information can be obtained by dialing 511 or visiting www.511Virginia.org
