(Roanoke County, VA—January 12, 2021) The Roanoke County Planning Commission will discuss and invite comments from the public on the draft Oak Grove Center Plan on February 2. The Oak Grove Center Plan envisions an attractive and vibrant village center, with thriving businesses, diverse housing options and extensive parks and trails. Future improvements will ensure travel options are safe and accessible for all ages and abilities.

The draft plan outlines recommendations for land use, community facilities, transportation, gateway/streetscape improvements and future community engagement. Both the complete plan and a graphic summary document are now available for review online. The plan is intended to guide future decisions and actions in the Oak Grove area over the next 20 years.

The public hearing will be held at the Roanoke County Administration Center, located at 5204 Bernard Drive, on Tuesday, February 2 at 6 p.m. The public hearing will be broadcast live, so members of the public may view the meeting on Roanoke Valley Television (RVTV3) - Channel 3 or on the Roanoke County website www.RoanokeCountyVA.gov. The City of Roanoke Planning Commission will hold a separate public hearing in March, date to be determined.

The public may view the plan and share comments online at  www.RoanokeCountyVA.gov/OakGrove until Friday, January 29. During the public hearing, citizens may share additional comments by email to planning@roanokecountyva.gov or by phone (540-776-7278). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all are encouraged to view and participate in meetings through electronic means.

The draft plan was developed over two years of substantial public engagement with local residents, businesses, property owners and other stakeholders. Over 1,300 people participated in the Plan’s development through surveys and community meetings in 2018 and 2019.

“Reimagine Oak Grove” is a joint planning effort between Roanoke County and the City of Roanoke to enhance the area for residents, visitors and employees. The study area covers 173 acres and more than 80 commercial and residential properties, including Keagy Village and Oak Grove Plaza in the County, and Southwest Plaza in the City.

The Oak Grove Center Plan is the third “Reimagine” planning study to be completed for an important commercial area in Roanoke County. It follows the adoption of the 419 Town Center Plan in July 2019 and the Hollins Center Plan in July 2020.

More information about the Oak Grove Center Plan and upcoming meetings can be found online at www.RoanokeCountyVA.gov/OakGrove.
