ROANOKE COUNTY, VA (November 15, 2011) —Do you have what it takes to Answer the Call? Being a Communications Officer (Emergency 9-1-1 Dispatcher) is neither a job, nor a career - it is a calling. This is the message interested applicants will hear at this weekend’s 9-1-1 Communications Officer Career & Qualification Day organized by Roanoke County.
The all-day event is designed to recruit interested applicants and will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Roanoke County Public Safety Center, 5925 Cove Road, Roanoke. This is an opportunity for people to learn what it takes to join the talented and dedicated men and women who answer the phone and dispatch help when you call 9-1-1.
Please note: Punctuality is important. The doors will open at 8:00 a.m. and will close at 8:30 a.m. No one will be admitted after 8:30 a.m. Also, all applicants must come prepared to spend the entire day.
In the morning, Roanoke County staff will provide an overview of the 9-1-1 Center, including Communications Officer prerequisites, training opportunities, benefits and job responsibilities. For those who are interested, the remainder of the day will be an opportunity to pass the basic typing, aptitude testing, and other initial screenings to see if they qualify to join the team. During the day, applicants will also tour the Center, observe live 9-1-1 operations, and talk to current staff about a career as a 9-1-1 professional.
Before applicants arrive, they are asked to visit Roanoke County’s website and complete an employment application: http://www.roanokecountyva.gov/jobs. If they do not have access to the Internet, applications will be available on-site. Applicants will need to bring a valid driver’s license and any other information they may need to complete an application if they aren’t able to do so in advance.
There are currently several Communication Officer positions available and Roanoke County intends to fill these positions from the qualified applicants in attendance. The County will also use this opportunity to fill the applicant pool for future positions.
