1. Where is the Roanoke County / Salem jail located?

The jail is located at 401 East Main Street, in Salem, Virginia. From Interstate 81, take Exit 140 (Salem / Roanoke College), Thompson Memorial Boulevard to East Main Street. The jail / courthouse complex is located at the intersection of Thompson Memorial and East Main Street on the right side of the street. Additional parking can be found across Thompson Memorial Boulevard behind the convenience store.

2. How do I check to see if an inmate is in the Roanoke County/Salem Jail?

You can search for an inmate using our Inmate Inquiry application, or call the jail docket at 540-283-3162 for further assistance.

3. How can I transfer money to an inmate's account?

A secured ATM is located in the main lobby of the jail facility for the purpose of receiving cash or credit card payments. 

No checks will be accepted. 

To transfer funds online, you may also use the Jail ATM website to deposit funds into an inmate's commissary account.

4. Can I make a phone call to someone being held at the Roanoke County / Salem Jail?

Inmates are not allowed to receive incoming calls. Inmates are only allowed to make outgoing collect calls. However, the jail does not limit the number of calls they can make during normal hours of operation. If you do not wish to receive collect calls from an inmate, simply refuse to accept the charges or call the jail docket office at (540)283-3145 and request that a block be placed on your phone number.

Inmates may be allowed to communicate by text using a jail-issued tablet.

6. Where is the Civil Department located?

The physical address of the Civil Department is: 
305 East Main Street Salem, Virginia 24153. 

The offices are located in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courthouse. 

Directions from I-81: Exit 140 (Salem/Roanoke College), Thompson Memorial Blvd to East Main Street. Jail & Courthouse Complex is located at the intersection of Thompson Memorial and East Main Street on the right side of the street. Additional parking can be found across Thompson Memorial Blvd behind the Quickway Food Mart.

7. Who do I call with questions or concerns regarding jury duty?

Please contact Circuit Court at (540) 387-6205 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

8. Who do I contact for more information about Community Outreach Programs?

The Roanoke County Sheriff's Office provides several Community Outreach programs to citizens, including Citizens Firearm Training, AVOID/RAD Self Defense Classes, Car Seat Installation events, and other programs. Call the Sheriff's Office at 540-283-3109 for the latest schedule or programs and events.
