What materials are accepted at the drop off locations?
All of the trailers take the following materials: mixed paper, plastic #1 and #2, and aluminum, steel cans, and tin cans. Mixed paper includes newsprint, office paper, magazines, and cardboard. Shredded paper is accepted at the trailers; however, please be sure to contain the shredded paper in a box or paper bag. Shredded paper loose in the trailer will make a huge mess during transport and also at the recycling center. Please do not place plastic shopping bags in the trailer. These can be returned to many retail locations.

Where can I recycle in Roanoke County?
Roanoke County offers several drop off locations throughout the County. The recycle trailers are located at the following Roanoke County middle schools: William Byrd Middle, and Glenvar Middle. We also have trailers at the Brambleton Center, Cox Communications, and Hollins University. They are all open to the public.

Why doesn't Roanoke County offer curbside recycling?
Roanoke County covers approximately 250 square miles. It would be very costly and not very efficient to send trucks to all homes in the County when participation cannot be guaranteed. Nor does it seem very equitable to offer the service to only SOME County residents, when ALL County residents would pay for the service. We have tried to make it as convenient as possible with the placement of the recycling trailers and hope to expand the program even further when the budget permits.
