Purpose
In accordance with requirements of the General Code of Virginia, every locality shall by resolution or ordinance create a local planning commission in order to promote the orderly development of the locality and its environs. In accomplishing the objectives of Code Section 15.2-2200, the local planning commissions shall serve primarily in an advisory capacity to the governing bodies. The Planning Commission serves as an advisory board to the Board of Supervisors, making recommendations on a variety of land use issues. The commission is also charged with preparing and maintaining the Community Plan and recommending changes to reflect new land use policies.
Composition
The Planning Commission consists of 5-15 members who are appointed by the Board of Supervisors. All members must be residents of the county or municipality, and must also be qualified by knowledge and experience to make decisions on questions of community growth and development. One member may be a member of the governing body, and one may be a member of the administrative branch.
