Fee Details

Roanoke County requires a vehicle license fee (PDF) (VLF) to be paid for every vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer that is garaged, stored, or parked in the county.

No Proration or Refunds of VLFs

The VLF is a non prorated and non refundable charge levied on each vehicle registered within Roanoke County. The full fee must be paid in all occasions except for a transfer procedure as outlined in Section 12-29 of the County of Roanoke Code. Pursuant to this section a transfer of the VLF for $1 can occur if a resident of Roanoke County sells or disposes of a vehicle prior to the acquisition and registration of a new vehicle. The new vehicle must be registered within 60 days of the previous vehicle's removal.

Effective January 1, 2008, Roanoke County eliminated the requirement to display automobile decals and instituted the VLF.
