The Last Word on Illegal Signs

Illegal sign examples

We hear this one a lot: "More signs mean more business." What's the harm in placing a few more highly visible signs on your property?

In fact, these "extra" signs are prohibited because they...

  1. Pose hazards to motorists and pedestrians. Most illegal signs are distracting to drivers and create blind spots.
  2. Mislead, confuse or obstruct potential customers trying to locate a business.
  3. Disturb or diminish the visual quality of the Roanoke Valley and of your property.
These consequences affect your potential customers and neighbors, and outweigh any marketing benefits of extra signage. Roanoke County is concerned about the safety of our citizens and we make it our goal to reduce the “signage clutter” in the County.

Prohibited signs include:
  • Vehicle sign parked adjacent to a public road
  • Sail fin
  • Stick-in-ground or step stake sign in public right-of-way
  • Portable

Please contact Community Development at 540-772-2065 for assistance obtaining a sign permit, or refer to Roanoke County Zoning Ordinance, Section 30-93-4, for more information.
