At the top of today’s meeting, the Board of Supervisors recognizes the Communications and Information Technology’s GIS Staff for receiving a PTI Solutions Award for its Glo Fiber Illumination App and a PTI Significant Achievement Award for its Legislative Redistricting App. For more information about each of these applications and the recognitions received, see our Awards and Citations page.

New Business

In new business, the Board of Supervisors approves a resolution canceling the 3:00 p.m. session of the June 27, 2023 meeting of the Board of Supervisors. See the Board Report for this action for more information.

The Board of Supervisors heard the first reading of an ordinance accepting funds in the amount of $312,504 from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, and appropriating these funds for use by the Roanoke County Police Department for school resource officers. The second reading and final vote on this measure is scheduled for June 27. See the Board Report for this action for more information.

The Board also heard the first reading of an ordinance approving an intergovernmental agreement for the operation of the Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection. The second reading and final vote on this measure is scheduled for June 27. See the Board Report for this action for more information.

The Board of Supervisors heard the first reading of an ordinance amending Article II (Definitions and Use Types), Article III (District Regulations), and Article IV (Use and Design Standards) of the Roanoke County Zoning Ordinance. The second reading and final vote on this measure is scheduled for June 27. See the Board Report for this action for more information.

Consent Agenda

The Board went on to approve the following items on its consent agenda in the form of one resolution:

  • An ordinance authorizing the execution of a Memorandum of Understanding with Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare and other local government entities governing the MARCUS Alert Program for the Roanoke Valley (First Reading and Request for Second Reading on June 27).   • An ordinance authorizing an Agreement with the City of Roanoke to authorize the City of Roanoke to act as the Erosion and Sediment Control Authority and Stormwater Management Program Authority for the Glade Creek Stream Restoration Project (First Reading and Request for Second Reading on June 27). See this item’s Board Report for more information.
  • A resolution requesting the Commonwealth Transportation Board name the Diuguids Lane (Route 639) bridge over the Roanoke River as the "USN AWS1 James P. Buriak Memorial Bridge", to erect signage and to designate funds in the amount of $2,500 from Board Contingency, Catawba Magisterial District. See this item’s Board Report for more information.

Work Session and Closed Session 

The Board of Supervisors moved to a joint work session with the Roanoke County Economic Development Authority to discuss economic development on the state, regional, and local levels. See more information about this work session.

The Board of Supervisors also held closed sessions to discuss the following items:

  • Discussion concerning the expansion of existing businesses or industries where no previous announcement has been made of the business' or industry's interest in locating or expanding its facilities in the community namely in the Catawba, Hollins, and Vinton Magisterial Districts; (Closed session per Section 2.2-3711.A.5)
  • Discussion, consideration, or interviews of prospective candidates for employment; assignment, appointment, promotion, performance, demotion, salaries, disciplining, or resignation of specific public officers, appointees, or employees of any public body; namely the County Administrator’s performance evaluation; (Closed session per Section 2.2-3711.A.1)
  • Discussion, consideration, or interviews of prospective candidates for employment; assignment, appointment, promotion, performance, demotion, salaries, disciplining, or resignation of specific public officers, appointees, or employees of any public body; namely the County Attorney’s performance evaluation. (Closed session per Section 2.2-3711.A.1)
