Transportation Project Updates: Summer 2018

Posted on July 5, 2018 at 1:34 PM by Bailey Howard-DuBois

The Commonwealth Transportation Board approved the Six Year Improvement Program on June 20, 2018 which included funding for several Roanoke County projects:

DDI

Route 419/U.S. 220 Diverging Diamond Interchange Preliminary Engineering: The proposed project would reconstruct the Route 419 (Electric Road) and U.S. 220 interchange to a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). Pedestrian and bicycle accommodations would be included to connect planned and existing facilities in Roanoke County and the City of Roanoke. Funding has been approved for the Preliminary Engineering phase only. This project implements the draft 419 Town Center Plan.

Fallowater

Fallowater Lane Extension: This project will upgrade the private driveway to Chuck E. Cheese to public road standards and construct a new section between the end of the private driveway and Almond Road, an existing private road, and Chevy Road, an existing public road. This connection would provide appropriate access to future multifamily development anticipated for the land designated as The Ridges in the draft 419 Town Center Plan. This project implements the draft 419 Town Center Plan.

Starkey Buck Mountain

Starkey Road/Buck Mountain Road Intersection Improvements: The proposed project would convert the unsignalized intersection to a single lane roundabout. Bicycle and pedestrian accommodations will be included in the design.

581 Interchange

I-581 Exit 2 Interchange Study: This study will analyze potential interstate highway improvements at the interchange with the goal of reducing traffic weaving conflicts affecting adjacent signalized and unsignalized intersections in Roanoke County and the City of Roanoke.

Greenway at Explore Park

Roanoke River Greenway through Explore Park: This proposed 1.8 mile greenway through Explore Park will be constructed as a shared use path for bicyclists and pedestrians. This project implements the Explore Park Adventure Plan.

Highland Road

Roanoke River Greenway Blue Ridge Parkway Crossing: This project proposes to construct 0.30 miles of Roanoke River Greenway along Highland Road and under the Blue Ridge Parkway through an existing tunnel. This section of the greenway will be constructed as a shared use path for bicyclists and pedestrians.
