[ARCHIVED] Walrond Park Trail Receives State Recognition

Roanoke County was recognized this week by the Virginia Association of Counties for innovative construction and funding methods used to build a new trail in Walrond Park, which was completed in early 2012. This annual award recognizes model local government programs in several different categories. Roanoke County was one of only 12 municipalities in the Commonwealth to receive a model program recognition, and the only winner selected in the Parks and Recreation category.

The 2/3 mile loop trail at Walrond Park utilized a grant from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, and inmate crew labor from the Roanoke County Sheriff's Office to create a unique crushed-stone surface and boardwalk trail at very little cost to local taxpayers.
