[ARCHIVED] Police Apprehend Suspect Near Northside High School

Suspect Apprehended

(Roanoke County, VA—June 20, 2018) Around 3:00 a.m. Friday a Roanoke County Police officer responded near Quality Inn off Peters Creek and Thirlane Roads for an unrelated call. While responding to that call, the officer observed a suspicious vehicle with a male inside near Quality Inn. When approached, the male took off on foot into a wooded area behind Quality Inn. The officer ran the tag number of the vehicle to discover outstanding charges in a neighboring jurisdiction. Roanoke County Police, assisted by Virginia State Police, set a perimeter in the area between Quality Inn and Northside High School. There was a heavy police presence in that area, including nearby homes and businesses. Police issued a RoCo Alert to area residents asking them to secure their doors and remain inside while police conducted the search.

Samuel Clay Mitchell, 44, of Vinton was taken into custody at approximately 8:30 a.m. by Roanoke County SWAT who were tracking Mitchell. He was apprehended in a wooded area between the Waffle House and Northside High School, approximately 25 yards off Peters Creek Road. A firearm was recovered out of a vehicle related to the incident. Other indicators led police to believe he may have been armed. They continue to investigate.

Mitchell is wanted for failure to appear for the following charges out of Roanoke City:
1 count - possession of cocaine
1 count - destruction of property
2 counts - entering property
