[ARCHIVED] Man Taken Into Custody Following SWAT Call

A Roanoke County man is in custody following a police incident early this morning.

Roanoke County Police were called to a residence in the 6100 block of Airport Road around 4:30 a.m. after 911 received a call that a man had threatened to stab his wife and family pet with a knife. The wife made the call to 911 and was outside the home when police got there. Police attempted to get the male subject to exit the couple’s home but he refused to come out.

Police were aware that firearms could be in the residence and the Roanoke County Police Department’s SWAT team was called. Police negotiators made contact with the male subject and shortly before 7:00 a.m., the man surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. No charges have been filed. The man – age 50 - was taken to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

Because of the nature of the incident and large police presence, police contacted the nearby Minnick Education Center to make school officials there aware of the situation.
