[ARCHIVED] Roanoke Valley Libraries Now Offers Downloadable Audiobooks and eBooks

Roanoke Valley Libraries (RVL) – a consortium that includes libraries in Roanoke County, Roanoke City, Salem, and Botetourt County – has expanded its services to offer free downloadable audiobooks and eBooks. Library card holders can check out and download digital media anytime, anywhere by visiting Powered by the popular OverDrive service, all that’s required is an Internet connection to a PC, Mac®, or compatible mobile device; a Roanoke Valley Libraries patron card; and a free online program that interfaces with OverDrive.

In three simple steps, patrons can browse, download, and enjoy. Titles downloaded to a home computer can be used immediately or transferred to a variety of devices, including Sony® Reader™, NOOK™, most Apple and Android products, and many others. Compatibility with Amazon’s Kindle is expected later this year. Some audio titles can also be burned to CD to listen on-the-go. Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period. There are no late fees!

This new service, powered by OverDrive, is free for patrons with a valid library card. OverDrive is a leading full-service distributor of eBooks, audiobooks, and other digital products. Founded in 1986, OverDrive is based in Cleveland, OH.
