[ARCHIVED] Open House Saturday at Roanoke County's Explore Park

ROANOKE COUNTY, VA (May 9, 2014) – Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism will celebrate the grand re-opening of Explore Park on Saturday, May 10 with a free Open House event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public is invited to explore the park’s 14 miles of trails and participate in a wide variety of family activities. Please note that pets are not allowed at special events, per County ordinance.

The Open House will feature activities such as hay rides, crafts, storytelling, music, environmental education, food vendors, performers, wedding expo, guided nature hikes and program demonstrations from Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism instructors. A full event schedule is available online at:

Also on Saturday, Explore Park will be hosting two exciting events within the open house. Kicking off at 10 a.m., the 6th annual Amazing County Treasure Hunt is a geocaching challenge in which teams search to find hidden caches of varying point values using a GPS device. New this year, choose between novice and expert skill levels. The Into the Wild 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Run also begins at 10 a.m., with proceeds to benefit Mill Mountain Zoo.

Explore Park is located just off milepost 115 of the Blue Ridge Parkway. This event marks the first spring season under the management of Roanoke County, which took over operation of Explore Park in October, 2013. Many areas of the park which have been closed for the past six years will once again re-open to the public this weekend. Bring the family out and let Explore Park be your destination for exploration!
