[ARCHIVED] Traffic Alert: Nighttime Lane Closure Scheduled for Elm Avenue in Roanoke

SALEM – As part of the Interstate 581 and Elm Avenue interchange project in Roanoke, nighttime lane closures will be in place beginning Monday, July 7, for the placement of girders on the Elm Avenue bridge over I-581.

On Monday, July 7 and Wednesday, July 9, southbound I-581 will be reduced to one lane beginning at 8 p.m. each night. The contractor will utilize intermittent slow rolls to restrict access around the bridge as work is taking place over I-581. Two lanes of southbound I-581 will be open to traffic by 6 a.m. the following morning.

On Tuesday, July 8, and Thursday, July 10, northbound I-581 will be reduced to one lane beginning at 8 p.m. each night. The contractor will utilize intermittent slow rolls to restrict access around the bridge while work is taking place over I-581. Two lanes of northbound I-581 will be open to traffic by 6 a.m. the following morning.

If necessary, the contractor may use lane closures during the same hours on Friday, July 11, to complete the work.

In addition to the I-581 lane closures, the westbound right lane of Elm Avenue will be closed Monday, July 7 and Tuesday, July 8, from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m.

During a slow roll, law enforcement will slow and possibly stop traffic as the girders are being placed on the Elm Avenue bridge over I-581. Each slow roll is anticipated to last 20 minutes.

This work is weather and work schedule permitting. Drivers are encouraged to watch for signs and message boards and to use caution as they travel through the work zone.

This work is part of the Elm Avenue/I-581 interchange improvement project. The estimated completion date for this project is summer 2015.
