[ARCHIVED] Salem District: Road Crews Make Progress on Treating Roads in Southwestern Virginia

SALEM – Snow plow drivers have made progress this morning on treating snow-covered and icy roads in counties throughout southwestern Virginia. Interstate 81, I-581 and I-77 and all primary roads (those numbered 1-599) in the Salem District are in clear to minor condition. Drivers should still watch for isolated slick spots on these major routes.
There are some secondary roads and neighbors streets (those numbered 600 and above) in parts of Botetourt, Bedford and Roanoke counties that are currently snow covered or icy. Crews are working to treat these routes with chemicals and abrasives and expect to make progress today and will continue treating these routes into the afternoon.
Secondary roads in Carroll, Craig, Henry, Giles, Floyd, Franklin, Montgomery, Patrick and Pulaski are in minor condition, which means drivers should watch for isolated slick spots, particularly in the higher elevations, on bridges and overpasses and in cooler shaded areas.
Travelers are reminded that they can get real-time information on road conditions, traffic incidents and congestion on Virginia roads by using VDOT’s 511 free mobile app or the www.511Virginia.org website and phone system, which can help travelers plan their routes accordingly.
The Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke.
