[ARCHIVED] Salem District: Motorists Advised to Avoid Travel During Weekend

Snow, freezing rain and rain are anticipated as part of this weather event. VDOT is advising motorists to avoid driving in slick and icy conditions this weekend, particularly during the height of the storm.
Drivers should be aware of the following:
•Due to cold temperatures, road conditions will likely change rapidly with snow and ice accumulating quickly as the storm moves through.
•As long as snow continues to fall, snowplow operators will be making passes over the interstates and primary roads (those numbered 1-599) and will not proceed to secondary routes (those numbered 600 and above) or neighborhood streets. The interstates and primary roads are VDOT’s first priority for snow removal during a weather event.
•Many secondary roads and neighborhood streets are still covered in frozen packed down snow from the previous storm as temperatures have not risen to help with melting. Additional snow or ice on these routes will make them extremely difficult to drive on.
•Flooding is possible as heavy rain is forecast as part of this weather system. Drivers should not cross ponding water. Ponded water also has the potential to freeze and create icy roads.
Travelers are reminded that they can get real-time information on road conditions, traffic incidents and congestion on Virginia roads by using VDOT’s 511 free mobile app or the www.511Virginia.org website and phone system.
The Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke
