[ARCHIVED] Brush Fire Burns on Hofawger Road

About 30 personnel have worked over the past several hours to clear a containment line around the flames with hand rakes, but gusty winds have made the task challenging. The terrain is mountainous and cannot be reached by brush trucks or ATVs.

The Virginia Department of Forestry has called in two bulldozers that are expected to arrive within the next hour. The bulldozers will dig a containment line out in front of the area burning and allow the flames to burn up to the line. Then crews will walk the line keeping it clear of any fallen leaves, branches or tree stumps.

Fire officials believe about 10 acres have now scorched. No structures are believed to be at risk. Hofawger Road is off of Franklin Road and the brush fire is on the Roanoke County-Franklin County line.

Updates will be provided throughout the night.
