[ARCHIVED] Jury Duty Scam

The Roanoke County Police Department has been investigating a large number of fictitious jury scam complaints. Victims have reported receiving phone calls from subjects identifying themselves as members of the Roanoke County Sheriff's Office. During the phone calls, the imposter deputies are advising the victims that they have missed jury duty and there is a warrant out for their arrest. Victims are being advised they can pay over the phone with cards such as Green Dot, etc. Other imposter deputies have offered to meet citizens in the parking lot of the Sheriff's office to accept payment on a Saturday. Some citizens who have received these calls are obtaining the cards and reading off the card numbers over the phone. Other citizens, after receiving these calls are calling the Police Department and/ or the Sheriff's Office to determine legitimacy. Roanoke County police are actively investigating these reports. The public is reminded that no law enforcement agency will call and ask for money over the phone in lieu of arrest. Please contact your local law enforcement agency to report the incident if you receive this type of call, or anything similar. Roanoke County residents can contact non-emergency dispatch at 540-562-3265.
