[ARCHIVED] Traffic Alert: Watch for Icy Roads this Weekend

With a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet or snow forecasted to impact portions of western Virginia December 16-18, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is warning motorists to expect possible slick or icy roads.

VDOT crews and contractors will begin monitoring conditions on Friday night and will continue overnight into Saturday or Sunday to treat or plow roads as necessary.  Bridges, overpasses, curves, shaded areas, higher elevations, cooler spots and elevated surfaces may become slick or icy before other areas.

With recent cold temperatures, even small amounts of winter precipitation could cause road conditions to change rapidly, so drivers are advised to consider postponing travel until temperatures rise to allow time for conditions to improve.

Travelers are reminded that they can get real-time information on road conditions, traffic incidents and congestion on Virginia roads by using VDOT’s 511 free mobile app or the www.511Virginia.org website and phone system, which can help travelers plan their routes accordingly.

The Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke.
