Roanoke County Fire & Rescue crews were called to West River Road at about 12:30 this afternoon for a report of a kayaker in the Roanoke River. When crews arrived to the site, they found a kayaker who was not injured and stuck on an island in the middle of the river behind the Western Virginia Regional Jail.
Reportedly, three adult males were kayaking down the river when their kayaks overturned in the swift water. Two males made it to shore, but the third was unable to get to shore and swam to a near-by island. The two males on shore attempted to swim across the river to rescue their friend, but an officer from the Regional Jail saw them and advised them to come back to shore and he would call 9-1-1.
Salem Fire-EMS Swift Water Rescue Team was called in to assist. They deployed a boat upstream with five personnel. The boat came down stream, picked up the man, and then motored the boat across the river to the shore were crews were waiting to receive the boat.
There were about 20 personnel on scene from the two departments.
