[ARCHIVED] Fire at Smith Gap Landfill Creates Truck Traffic on Bradshaw Road

Several citizens have called or emailed Roanoke County regarding trucks running on Bradshaw Road this week.

A welding operation sparked a structure fire at the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority (RVRA) facility at Smith Gap Landfill on Tuesday of this week. The welding was taking place on a garbage tipper machine when combustible materials ignited in that area. The resulting fire in the garbage tipper burned up the wiring in the garbage tipper and the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority (RVRA) is working on repairs.

Because of the damage caused by the fire, the train cannot dump the trash once it reaches the landfill. Therefore, all of the trash collected by the RVRA must temporarily be sent to Smith Gap Landfill by trucks.

This is only temporary until repairs can be made. At this time, Roanoke County does not know when repairs will be complete.

Citizens with further questions should contact the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority at (540) 857-5050.
