[ARCHIVED] Catawba Mountain Wildland Fire

The fire is currently estimated to be about 325 acres and 25% contained. This continues to be an inter-agency effort with Roanoke County Fire and Rescue, Virginia Department of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service all providing resources. There are no structures threatened by the fire at this time and no injuries have been reported. About 75 people, mostly from the U.S. Forest Service and Virginia Department of Forestry are on scene today to strengthen containment lines. Catawba Valley Drive, also known as Route 311, is open today but we are asking motorists in the area to please use caution because of smoke conditions and the presence of firefighters and equipment along the road. The Appalachian Trail in the area of McAfee’s knob remains closed today for hikers. We are also asking hikers to please avoid the area from the parking lot at the top of Catawba Mountain to McAfee’s Knob. The Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Office in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Forestry are investigating a cause for this fire.
