Roanoke, VA – The Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection in conjunction with Angels of Assisi and the Roanoke Valley SPCA will be holding the first group foster orientation for participants in the
FRVR KITTENS foster program on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the South County Library located at 6303 Merriman Road, Roanoke, VA 24018.
FRVR KITTENS is a joint program among RCACP, Angels of Assisi, and the Roanoke Valley SPCA to proactively pool resources to manage the influx of orphan kittens and homeless litters that occur in the spring, summer and fall throughout the Roanoke Valley. Last year, RCACP received 2,352 cats into the shelter, which is an extraordinary amount. Through partnerships with AoA and RVSPCA, over 1,800 of these homeless cats and kittens received medical care and the opportunity to find forever homes. By working together, we can ensure that no single agency is overwhelmed with kittens in their shelter. Our respective foster coordinators are working together to combine our resources and distribute the burden among the three agencies. The most important resource for this program is obviously our foster families! Without the willingness of Roanoke Valley residents to foster these littlest babies, we would not be able to save them and place them with forever families. The committee began advertising in January for foster families to build up a database to allow them to be contacted as the kittens began to come in. We didn’t have to wait long as the kittens began arriving in March and the stream has been steady since then.
Many of those families that reached out to us have not fostered before and training is essential for successful fostering – knowing what can happen and what to do provides a safety net for fosters. We are all very excited by the response from the community and it is not too late to sign up. This orientation is open to the public and anyone interested in learning more is welcome to attend. We will have applications available for those who come that day that have not previously signed up, as well as “live” visual aids (there will be kittens to cuddle!).
In addition, the Friends of RCACP (FORCACP) will be collecting supplies for our
FRVR KITTENS fosters by throwing a “Kitten Shower” at the event. Donations can also be received at the shelter at 1510 Baldwin Ave NE throughout the spring and summer as all donations will be needed throughout season.
