The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) plans to temporarily close 12 O’Clock Knob Road (Route 694) next week (3/16 - 3/20). VDOT expects the road will be closed to through traffic daily Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. The closure will begin at Powell Drive (Route 820) on the Salem side of the mountain and end at Wade Road (Route 746). VDOT has placed message boards along the road on both sides of the mountain alerting motorists of the closure.
The planned work is ditch and pipe maintenance. The road is narrow, steep, and has numerous curves throughout. VDOT will have several pieces of large equipment including motor graders and tandem dump trucks performing the maintenance work. The barricades will be placed at the most optimal turn around locations. VDOT will allow local traffic to include services, access to the properties inside the closure.
