At its regularly scheduled board meeting on March 24, 2021, RVRA’s Board of Directors authorized the cancellation of its rail transportation contract.  The Board also approved two construction projects that will allow the Authority to properly transition from rail to trucking, including work at the Tinker Creek Transfer Station (TCTS) in Roanoke and work at the Smith Gap Regional Landfill and its Transportation Corridor.  Construction is anticipated to take up to four or five months to complete.  RVRA’s objective is to continue providing for your disposal needs with minimal disruption.   However, some temporary operating adjustments will be necessary, as follows.

Effective Friday, April 2, 2021 and until further notice: The Tinker Creek Transfer Station located on Hollins Road will only accept residential customers; whole loads of tires, and whole loads of untreated wood waste.   RVRA’s Household Hazardous Waste Program will continue to operate as-is. All commercial (other than untreated wood waste only & whole loads of tires) and municipal customers will be diverted to the Salem Transfer Station (STS).  During this time, we ask for your cooperation and patience as we make these improvements.

Until further notice, effective Friday, April 2, 2021, RVRA’s operating hours will be:

Tinker Creek Transfer Station – Residential; Commercial Untreated Wood Waste Only; & Whole Loads of Tires
Monday -Friday,  8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. & Saturday 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Salem Transfer Station – Open to all Customers (except Commercial Untreated Wood Waste Only & Whole Loads of Tires)
M-F 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. & Sat. 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Please note: Operating hours may need to be adjusted further as necessary.

Additionally, effective April 2, 2021, for commercial customers, the Surcharge rate at the Salem Transfer Station will be permanently eliminated.  Upon completion of this transition, all eligible facility users (municipal, commercial, & residential), will be able to use either transfer station based upon their needs and convenience.

Again, thank you for your cooperation in advance and RVRA looks forward to continuing its service to the Roanoke Valley region.  If you have any questions or comments please feel to reach out to our staff at www.rvra.net or by calling (540) 857-5050.
