On October 18, 2012, School Resource Officer Johnny Runyon was awarded the Roanoke County Police Department’s Lifesaving Award.
On September 25, 2012, Officer Runyon was in the cafeteria at William Byrd Middle School when a student approached him. The student was choking on a piece of food and could no longer breathe. Officer Runyon took quick action, performing the Heimlich maneuver on the child, causing the food to dislodge and expel.
