ROANOKE COUNTY, VA (November 6, 2012) – A hardware failure is causing serious issues with the Roanoke County/Salem Department of Social Services’ telephone system. Replacement parts for the phone system have been ordered but it could be at least a week before the problem is resolved.
The automated attendant that allows callers to bypass the switchboard and go directly to an employee’s extension is not working nor is the department’s voicemail system. Currently, all calls to social services are being routed to the main switchboard. However, the switchboard is only able to handle a limited number of calls at one time. Callers who are unable to get through to the switchboard will only hear ringing and are asked to call back.
To report abuse or neglect, call the department’s hotline at 1-540-387-6040. If there is no answer, contact the state hotline for Child Protective Services at 1-800-553-7096. For Adult Protective Service complaints, call 1-888-832-3858.
Citizens who want to request an application or report changes are urged to do so online at www.commonhelp.virginia.gov .
