(ROANOKE COUNTY, Virginia - January 16, 2026) The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released a mapping application to host new, preliminary flood maps for our region. Roanoke County residents are encouraged to view the new maps to see the changes and submit comments or appeals to FEMA before these maps are published in their final version later this spring.
The new floodplain maps will determine residents' need for flood insurance. Homeowners in new expanded areas may now be required to purchase flood insurance for federally backed home mortgages. In other areas, FEMA has determined there is a decreased risk of flooding and homeowners may find a reduced need for flood insurance.
Visit the Region 3 Flood Map Changes Application (https://arcg.is/0PuKW8 and use the Search button to enter your address. Yellow areas on the maps represent increases to the flood risk area, while purple areas represent decreases in risk.

On Thursday, January 29, 2026, Roanoke County will hold a third public webinar for the Housing Market Analysis Study from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Microsoft Teams. The webinar will be hosted by RKG Associates, Roanoke County's consultant on this study, and will consist of a detailed analysis of the supply, demand, and needs of the Roanoke County housing market, as well as the results of a site identification analysis. It can be joined on the study webpage on January 29th, no pre-registration is needed.
(ROANOKE COUNTY, Virginia – December 22, 2026) Roanoke County’s Information Technology GIS staff has released a new platform for it’s GIS services, just in time for 2026.
The County’s popular GIS applications are available in a new Maps & Apps Gallery. This new web page features “address pass-technology” after entering an address at the top of the Maps & Apps Gallery, enabling users to switch between the ever-popular TaxView App, OneView App, PropertyView and other applications without having to reenter an address or tax map number.
The Maps & Apps Gallery also features the ability to sort the applications people most, add favorites, and customize their own user experience. Several GIS applications have been re-launched with the latest technology framework, enabling “Swipe” to compare current and historical map layers; enhanced search capabilities; and improved tools to draw, get directions, print, or get the coordinates of a selected parcel.
GIS staff also launched a new Property Value App, that enables users to look up the assessed market value of any property and see a clear breakdown of how that value was determined. This app helps homeowners verify that their property taxes are fair, accurate, and equitable. The Property Value App also features market value trends, sales information, and property value comparison tools.

You can now add optional cell phone numbers to our RoCo Alert system to receive notifications in the case of an emergency. New features in the system also allow you to voluntarily share information that may help save your life, including health conditions, medications, mobility needs, or information about pets that emergency responders may need to know.
In the event of a local emergency or natural disaster, Roanoke County’s public safety officials will use RoCo Alert to send recorded notifications to home telephones in Roanoke County. Cellular telephone numbers, email addresses, and even VoIP telephone numbers (like Vonage or COX) can be added to receive emergency alerts by visiting our RoCo Alert web page.
Alerts are based on map locations and can be issued for County-wide emergencies or targeted to specific street addresses or neighborhoods. Users of the system can also add multiple locations for alerts, such as a workplace, an elderly parent’s home, or a child’s school.
RoCo Alert is managed by public safety officials and is only used in an emergency, when lives or property may be threatened. Examples of alerts may include local or regional flooding, dangerous wildfires, severe weather notices, boil water notices, or evacuation notices.
