This update provides information about the status and progress of major transportation projects in Roanoke County.

Plantation Road Bicycle, Pedestrian and Streetscape Improvement Project Update

Roanoke County staff have been implementing the Hollins Area Plan since its adoption by the Board of Supervisors in 2008. The most significant implementation strategy so far, the Plantation Road Bicycle, Pedestrian and Streetscape Improvement Project, is moving towards construction in the next few months. Phase I of the project is fully funded and includes a 10-foot-wide asphalt shared use path for bicycles and pedestrians between Williamson Road and BSC Ventures/Double Envelope, on the west side of the road. Sidewalk will continue from BSC Ventures/Double Envelope to Walrond Drive. Curb, gutter, street trees, a community welcome sign and utility relocations are also a part of this project.

Funding has also been awarded for a new traffic signal at the intersection of Plantation Road and Lila Drive. This project is currently in the Preliminary Engineering phase with a construction advertisement date of 2020-2021.

Funding has been requested for Phase II of the Plantation Road Project, which would improve the Walrond Drive intersection and construct sidewalk from Walrond Drive to Gander Way on the west side of the road with pedestrian signals and crosswalks at the Gander Way and Plantation Road intersection, curb, gutter, street trees and utility relocations. Funding awards will be finalized in June.

Transportation Funding Update

Over the past few years, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has changed the way locality transportation projects are evaluated and funded.  Roanoke County and the Roanoke Valley Transportation Planning Organization (RVTPO) have received funding for several important projects in, or adjoining Roanoke County. The list below highlights a sample of major projects that have been awarded funding through many different VDOT sources. Pending projects recently submitted for funding are also included below.
