Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance (VENA) Benefits

Governor Glenn Youngkin has declared a state of emergency allowing the use of state funds to issue Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance (VENA) benefits to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) customers in November if the federal government shutdown is not resolved.

VENA benefits will not replace SNAP; VENA is a temporary, state-funded effort designed to support SNAP recipients until federal benefits resume.
VENA benefits will be issued weekly, instead of monthly, to ensure ongoing support and flexibility during the federal shutdown.
If the federal shutdown ends in November, regular SNAP distributions from the federal government will restart, and VENA assistance will conclude.
